Best toys for 5 year olds
14 picks · prices and stock checked 21 October 2026
Five is a great age to buy for. Most children can now follow simple instructions, play a game with rules and stick at a build for longer than ten minutes, but they still love pretend play. So the best presents usually do one of two things: give them a small challenge they can finish themselves, or give them a world to play in.
Every toy below is listed by Hamleys in its Toys for 5 & 6 Year Olds section and was in stock in Hamleys' product feed on 21 October 2026. We've kept the descriptions to what the retailer actually says, and noted anything that's a lucky dip or better for a younger or older child.

A hand-painted Schleich figure of a female Bernese mountain dog. A solid stocking filler, and it works with other Schleich animals.
Quick buying tips
- Budget: £7–£15 gets a good stocking filler (Kinetic Sand, a Hot Wheels pack, a small LEGO set). £15–£30 is the sweet spot for a main present. Above £40 you're into bigger playsets and gadgets.
- First LEGO? Pick a set marked 4+ or 5+. Sets marked 7+ or 8+ usually need a grown-up's help at five.
- Screens: the Kidizoom watch is the only screen-based pick here. Everything else is hands-on.
- Lucky dips: mystery packs and assortments (Kinetic Sand dogs, Hot Wheels packs) can't be chosen. Avoid them if your child wants one specific item.
- Delivery: Hamleys' feed listed delivery at £3.99 on most of these items (some free) at the time of writing. Check at checkout.
